Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.

The army listed him as living in Norway Township, Racine County, WI, age 34, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 9, 1861 at Milwaukee, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 2, 1861 as a Sergeant (Sersjant). Olson was sick in St. Louis on March 4, 1862 and was reported on June 3, 1862 to be still sick at St. Louis. He was thought to have deserted from Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 1, 1862, but was found to be sick in Evansville, IN. He was declared unfit for service and was discharged on November 14, 1862.

After the war, he returned to WI and married Anna Johnson. Together they had at least one child named Anne (1867). In 1900, he was a widower living in Clinton, Barron County, WI with his daughter and her family. He died on June 27, 1901. He is buried in First Lutheran Cemetery, Barron, Barron County, WI.
