Albert Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves “KK’s Protectors” in honor of the 15th’s first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.
The army listed him as living in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA, born in Norway, unmarried, a farmer, and age 35. He had blue eyes, blond hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’7”. He enlisted for three years on November 26, 1861 at Decorah, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 29, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal). Olson was wounded in the Battle at Stones River, TN on December 30 & 31, 1862, and sent to hospital in Nashville, TN. He served as an escort with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL in October 1863. Olson was sick in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863 and sent to Convalescent Center there. He died of disease in General Hospital at Knoxville, TN on March 17, Mar 1864. Olson was buried in National Cemetery at Knoxville; section 6, grave 12.
