Albert A. Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the "Wergeland Guards" in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Nelson as living in Pleasant Spring, Dane County, WI, age 21, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 12, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was then promoted to Sergeant (Sersjant). On December 31, 1862, he was wounded at Stones River. Shot in the left arm. One report says he was sent to Nashville. Another says he was taken prisoner at Stones River and exchanged in St. Louis and in Annapolis, MD. On October 13, 1863, he was back in Company B, and assigned to the provisional transport from Stevenson, AL. Nelson mustered out with Company B at Chattanooga, TN on December 2, 1864.

After the war, he moved to MN. In 1890, he was living in Fisher, Polk County, MN.
