Johan J. Hoff was born on May 18, 1845 at Vardal, Oppland, Norway, the son of Johannes Johnsen Skonhovd and Anne Olsdatter. He came to America with his parents and siblings in 1847. He came to Vernon County. He joined the WI 15th Infantry. He enlisted with his brother, Peder Hoff, and father, John N. Hoff, in 1861. The army listed him as living in Lower Coon Valley, Hamburg Township, Bad Ax (Vernon) County, WI.
