Søren L. H. Hauge was born in Laerdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, on January 16, 1840. His parents were Halvor Helgesen Hauge and Berthe Magdalene Pedersdatter. He was the elder brother of Ludvig Hauge. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of his company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Hauge as living in Sterling, Bad Ax (Vernon) County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 14, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was then assigned as Company Wagoner. Hauge was sick in Bowling Green, KY on September 17, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal). He was sick on the 23rd and the 25th of July 1864. He mustered out with the company on December 2, 1864 at Chattanooga, TN. He returned to Sterling after the war. He died in Crawford County (before 1907).
