The company called itself Clausen’s Guards in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen.  Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed Hauff as living in Windsor, Dane County, WI, age 19, and a machinist. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on December 31, 1863 at Windsor, and mustered at Madison, WI on January 11, 1864 as a Private (Menig) and Recruit. He joined K Company at Strawberry Plains, VA on March 31, 1864. He was sick in Atlanta, GA on September 29, 1864. He became unfit for service and was discharged from the service on November 22, 1864 at Whiteside, TN on orders from General Thomas. John Hauff was a brother of Captain Henry Hauff commander of E Company.

After the war, he moved to back to WI. He married Sophia Anderson on March 22, 1870 in Wermont, Dane County, WI. They had at least 6 children, including: Martha (1872), John A. (1875), Henry N. (1878), George E. (1879), William F. (1881), and Nelson F. (1884). He worked as a machinist. By 1880, they were living in Chicago, Cook County, IL, and were still in that city in 1920. In 1924, Sophia was a widow and filed a pension in his name.
