Olaus Halvorson Dahl was born on March 22, 1841 at Solberg under Aaröe, Sannidal (Sandøkedal, Kragerø ?), Telemark, Norway, the son of Halvor Eilertsen Dahl and Anne. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves "KK's Protectors" in honor of the 15th's first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.

The army listed Halvorson as living in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA, unmarried, and age 21. He enlisted for three years on December 4, 1861 at Decorah, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 29, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in a military hospital on August 28, 1862, and also sick in Farmington, MS. He was discharged from the service for disease in Cincinnati, OH on October 9, 1862.

After the war, Dahl became a carpenter. He married Mary Johnson Kaasa on November 4, 1864. They had eight children, including Anna (1866), John W. (1868), Henry (1870), Chrisena (1872), Molley (1874), Hattie (1875), and James E. (1880). He died on August 24, 1883 at Decorah, IA. He was buried in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, lot 164.
