Anders Berg was born in Norway, but the military records list Sweden. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves "KK's Protectors" in honor of the 15th's first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.

The army listed Berg as living in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA, unmarried, and age 27. He enlisted for three years on December 15, 1861 at Decorah, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 29, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in a hospital at Mound City, IL on March 18, 1862. He disappeared from hospital on March 31, 1862 and was listed as deserter, but he was said to have rejoined his company at Mississippi River Island No. 10. He was then sick and was discharged from the service from there on June 11, 1862. He later he joined the F Company of the IA Ninth Cavalry, giving his residence as Calmar, Winneshiek County, IA and age as 29. He enlisted on November 11, 1863 and mustered the same day as a Private. He mustered out February 3, 1866 at Little Rock, AR. He was said to be living in IA in 1894.
