SUMMARY:Telling the Family Story Workshop - Online
DESCRIPTION:Many of us get interested in genealogy because we are interested in how our family came to be. We want to be able to tell that family story to better understand where we come from and who we are. In this workshop\, we will consider best practices for telling or writing your family story. How can you translate genealogical research into a narrative? How do you pick the most important details to share? How can you make your stories interesting and exciting for your chosen audience or readers?Bring your ideas\, questions\, and even stories-in-progress\,  and we’ll discuss how to start shaping them into a cohesive story arc. \nWhen: Tuesday\, April 28. 10:00am-11:30pm. This workshop will be 90-minutes long. \nWhere: Online through Zoom \nInstructor: Chrissy Widmayer \nCost: $10 member/$15 non-member \nThis workshop is made possible thanks to a partnership between the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Wisconsin Humanities’ Community Powered initiative\, which works to build resilience in communities using the tools of history\, culture\, and storytelling. \nPLEASE NOTE – This workshop will not be recorded. \nALL CLASSES BEGIN CENTRAL TIME \nLink for the Zoom meeting will be emailed closer to the start of class. \nContact us at genealogy@nagcnl.org with any questions or for more details about the class. \n  \nChrissy Widmayer is a scholar of community connections. She has a PhD in Folklore Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, and an MFA in Creative Writing from George Mason University. Her dissertation research explored how communities create connections and relationships using foodways and storytelling. Her postdoctoral research builds on the work she’s done as the director of Wisconsin Humanities’ award-winning Community Powered initiative\, which puts the tools of history\, culture\, and storytelling in the hands of communities through training and educational programming. Chrissy hopes to help Nordic American communities in the Upper Midwest build capacity to collect their own folklore and produce dynamic public programming around those traditions. Chrissy is also a co-founder of WiseFolk Productions and content creator for Folkwise.

SUMMARY:Traditional Norwegian Farmhouse Brewing Webinar
DESCRIPTION:How did the Norwegians brew beer in the old country? What did it taste like? What happened to their brewing tradition when the immigrants arrived in North America?  If these questions have captured your interest\, join NAGC for a webinar to discover the answers. This lecture will begin with an overview of traditional brewing in Norway\, and then follow the Norwegians and their ale bowls to their new homes in the Upper Midwest. Along the way\, we will learn how climate\, region\, economics\, technology\, traditional knowledge transfer\, and social norms all interact to yield a remarkable range of beers. \nAmanda Thorstad hails from the edges of the Koshkonong Prairie settlement in Wisconsin\, from a family that is deeply immersed in its Norwegian heritage. She grew up with stories of her Norwegian ancestors\, and made her way to St. Olaf College as a music major. Amanda initially learned how to brew beer from her dad\, and then expanded her skill through books and experimentation\, as well as attending brewing classes and festivals in western Norway. She is especially interested in beer’s long history as a hyper-local agricultural product. Amanda’s ancestral roots inform her study of traditional Norwegian brewing. Accordingly\, much of her research focuses on the brewing traditions from Voss\, Sogn & Fjordane\, and Southern Wisconsin. \nPrice: $10 (members)/$15 (non-members) \nPlease call us at 608-255-2224 or email genealogy@nagcnl.org if you have any questions. You will receive a Zoom link with your receipt email upon purchase. \nTime: 10 am Central Time. The webinar will be recorded and sent to ticket holders after the event.
