SUMMARY:Traditional Norwegian Farmhouse Brewing Webinar
DESCRIPTION:How did the Norwegians brew beer in the old country? What did it taste like? What happened to their brewing tradition when the immigrants arrived in North America?  If these questions have captured your interest\, join NAGC for a webinar to discover the answers. This lecture will begin with an overview of traditional brewing in Norway\, and then follow the Norwegians and their ale bowls to their new homes in the Upper Midwest. Along the way\, we will learn how climate\, region\, economics\, technology\, traditional knowledge transfer\, and social norms all interact to yield a remarkable range of beers. \nAmanda Thorstad hails from the edges of the Koshkonong Prairie settlement in Wisconsin\, from a family that is deeply immersed in its Norwegian heritage. She grew up with stories of her Norwegian ancestors\, and made her way to St. Olaf College as a music major. Amanda initially learned how to brew beer from her dad\, and then expanded her skill through books and experimentation\, as well as attending brewing classes and festivals in western Norway. She is especially interested in beer’s long history as a hyper-local agricultural product. Amanda’s ancestral roots inform her study of traditional Norwegian brewing. Accordingly\, much of her research focuses on the brewing traditions from Voss\, Sogn & Fjordane\, and Southern Wisconsin. \nPrice: $10 (members)/$15 (non-members) \nPlease call us at 608-255-2224 or email genealogy@nagcnl.org if you have any questions. You will receive a Zoom link with your receipt email upon purchase. \nTime: 10 am Central Time. The webinar will be recorded and sent to ticket holders after the event.

SUMMARY:Poetry and Art from the National Romanticism in Norway 1850 to 1905
DESCRIPTION:The constitution was written in 1814\, with the agreement with Sweden that Norway would be under their king\, after Denmark lost a war with Napoleon. After several hundred years under Denmark\, the Norwegian population wanted to find their own identity as a nation. The longing to be free from Sweden developed into an unrest in the country\, and from that came a strong love for the land and the language. This was the time where large personalities were expressing loudly what the people wanted to hear. I will present how the Norwegians were inspired through art\, writing and music and grew into a nation. \nJoin NAGC’s Wencke Braathen for this webinar exploring Norwegian sovereignty. \nPrice: $10 (members)/$15 (non-members) \nPlease call us at 608-255-2224 or email genealogy@nagcnl.org if you have any questions. \nTime: 10 am – 12 pm Central Time. The webinar will be recorded and sent to ticket holders after the event.

SUMMARY:1814 to 1905 - Norway Finding its identity as a Sovereign Nation Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The 17th of May is the national holiday of Norway. It is celebrated in honor of the signing of the constitution in 1814 on Eidsvold with representatives from the entire country. This action was a rebellious act to claim Norway as a sovereign country. It had already been under Denmark since the devastation of the plagues in 1350 and was then given as a war prize to Sweden. Some wise and educated Norwegians gathered on Eidsvold under Count Jarlsberg\, (yes the cheesemonger)\,  and wrote up a constitution based on the recently written American and the French one a little later.  Let’s explore the years of political turmoil among growing Norwegian patriotism from 1814 to 1905. \nJoin NAGC’s Wencke Braathen for this webinar exploring Norwegian sovereignty. \nPrice: $10 (members)/$15 (non-members) \nPlease call us at 608-255-2224 or email genealogy@nagcnl.org if you have any questions. \nTime: 10 am – 11 am Central Time. SUMMARY:The Celtic Church of St. Olav and the Later Battle with the Catholic Church for Norwegian Souls Webinar
DESCRIPTION:St. Olav is credited with bringing Christianity to Norway in 1030 AD. There is more to that story. The Vikings were in close relationship with the Celtic Church on the British Isles. Olav was baptized in Normandy at the monastery in Rouen. That particular monastery was founded by Clothilde and Clothar who were Cathars\, a small group of wise Christians who lived in Southern France. These two foundation stones of Olav’s faith were not Catholic. The form of Christianity that entered the west coast of Norway was Celtic in nature\, and in opposition to the Catholic bishops who came up from Germany to Hamar north of Oslo. The battle for people’s souls between these two religious orientations happened in Norway. Let’s investigate these rarely mentioned historical facts further. \nJoin NAGC’s Wencke Braathen for this webinar exploring the Christianization of Norway. \nPrice: $10 (members)/$15 (non-members) \nPlease call us at 608-255-2224 or email genealogy@nagcnl.org if you have any questions.
