Itinerary:
Tuesday May 27
Depart the USA
May 28
Arrive in Oslo. The tour manager will meet you at the airport and take you to a hotel downtown. Afternoon and evening free to explore Oslo on your own.
May 29
We drive out to Bygdøy peninsula and get a tour of the Norwegian Folk Museum. After the visit, we will head out of Oslo and drive to Hamar and visit the Emigrant museum. The museum covers the whole history of the emigration from Norway, but the emigration to America is the most important part. After the visit here, we will drive alongside the beautiful Mjøsa, which is the biggest lake in Norway. We will stay overnight in Lillehammer, which is at the northern end of the lake, and most known for the 1994 Winter Olympics.
May 30
After breakfast at the hotel, we will visit Maihaugen outdoors museum. We continue our trip through Gudbrandsdalen, across Dovre Mountain and end up in Trondheim at the end of the day.
We check into our hotel where we will stay for two nights.
May 31
We start the day with a city tour that includes Nidaros Cathedral. That is the Norwegian National Cathedral and is said to be built on the grave of St. Olav, “Norway’s Eternal King”.
June 1
After check-out we drive to Orkanger, where we will visit Thamspaviljongen, or the Norway Buidling from Little Norway, Mt. Horeb, WI. Drive to Geiranger. Before we get to Geiranger we will drive the famous Trollstigen (Troll Path). Overnight at Union Hotel.
June 2
Today we will really drive through “Fjord Country”. Stop for lunch by an arm of Jostedalsbreen, the biggest glacier in Norway. Drive to Balestrand, overnight at Kvikne’s Hotel.
June 3
We start the day by taking the fully electric ferry from Balestrand across Sognefjord to Vik. That is the home to Habberstad stavechurch. An exact replica of this church is at Hjemkomst Museum, Moordhead, MN. Drive across Vik Mountain, to Gudvangen and Flåm. From here we will take the famous Flåmsbana to Myrdal, and then to Voss. The bus will wait for us at the railwaystation in Voss. From there we will drive the last two hours to to Bergen. We will stay two nights in Bergen, at a hotel near the Fish Market, and Fløibanen (funicular).
June 4
Visit Western Norway Emigration Center outside Bergen. Afternoon free to explore Bergen.
June 5
We check out from the hotel and continue south to Karmøy, where we will visit the Viking Village and the Viking Museum in Åvaldsnes. Drive to Utstein and visit the home port of the replica of Retauration, often referred to as “Norway’s Mayflower”. The vessel may not be there because they are planning to sail from Stavanger to New York on the same dates as they did 200 years ago in 1825, departing Stavanger on July 4th and arriving in New York on Leiv Erikson Day, Oct 9th.
Drive to Stavanger, where we will stay for two nights.
June 6
We have a full day in Stavanger, where we have some options on what to do:
- Hike to Preikestolen (The Pulpit). Maybe Norway’s most famous hike.
- Cruise of Lysefjorden, where we can see Preikestolen from fjord level.
- Boat trip to “Flor & Fjære”, an island filled with flowers and exotic plants. A truly unique experience. The tour includes a tour of the island and a 3-course lunch.
- Stavanger on your own
The three first options will be at an additional cost.
June 7
Today we will drive through the southernmost part of Norway, from Stavanger to Grimstad. It is a small, cozy town with beautiful small, white houses. Stay overnight in Grimstad
June 8
We start on the last leg of the trip, towards Oslo airport. Stay overnight near the airport.
June 9
After check-out we will go over to the airport and check in for the flight back to the USA. We arrive in the USA in the afternoon or early evening.
