Christian Lanstrum was born in Sweden. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet. The army listed him as living in Des Moines, IA and aged 24. Lanstrum was appointed Second Lieutenant (Løytnant) on November 9, 1861 and mustered on that day. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on May 24, 1863 and then promoted to Captain (Kaptein) on January 19, 1864. He was mustered out on May 16, 1865, at the expiration of his term of service.
