Educated as a landscape painter. Came to America in 1841 to Cleveland, OH. Came to Burlington, IA, serving as interpreter for a party of Swedish immigrants. Mexican War: Enrolled 14 Apr 1847 at Burlington. Sergeant. Wounded in the battle of Churubusco. Mustered out with his Company on 4 Aug 1848. Civil War: Age 42. Appointed Captain of IA 6th Infantry Co I on 12 Jul 1861. Mustered 18 Jul 1861. Wounded,lost his right arm, at Shiloh, TN, 6 Apr 1862. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, second in command, of the IA 25th Infantry on 6 Sep 1862. Mustered there 27 Sep 1862. Resigned, 8 Jun 1863. Accepted position as Lieutenant Colonel, 2nd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, on 1 Nov 1863. Mustered out, 1 Jul 1865. Post war: Suffered paralysis and loss of his eyesight. Died 25 Jan 1897 at Burlington.
