John N. Brown was born in Norway. He joined K Company of the WI 13th Infantry. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

The army listed Brown as living in Christiania, Dane County, WI, a printer, and age 20. He had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and stood 6’. He enlisted for three years on April 17, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered on June 29, 1861 at Fond du Lac, WI as a Sergeant (Sersjant). He was reduced to ranks on May 18, 1862. He was discharged from the service on November 26, 1862 for promotion in WI 15th Infantry.
