Lars Bolstad was the son of Nils Larsen Bolstad and Anna Olsdatter Vindeg. He was one of six children: Knut, Lewis (Lars), Isabel, Betsey, Ole, and Sarah.
Lars joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B for three years on October 11, 1861 at Madison, WI. He mustered on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
He was living in Cambridge, Dane County, WI. At the Battle of Stones River, he was wounded and taken to Nashville, TN. He was wounded again at Chicamauga, GA, and taken prisoner. After an exchange, he went back to his regiment. He was killed at Vicksburg, MS, according to Martin Ulvestad, and at Kenesaw Mountain, according to Sophie Boe. He is buried in the National Cemetery at Marietta, GA, section G, grave 1449. There is a memorial stone at the East Koshkonog Cemetery.
