Andrew Thompson was born “Andreas Smeland” about 1832 at Arendahl, Norway. He joined the TX 15th Infantry, Company I. He enlisted for the duration of the war on July 17, 1862 at Corsicana, Texas as a Private (Menig). He was absent without leave during March and April 1863. In November and December 1863, he was sick in camp. He was detailed to the Quartermaster department from February through April 1864 and sick in camp during May and June 1864. He was assigned extra duty as regimental blacksmith from mid-August 1864. From December 20, 1864 to February 1865, he was on furlough and then returned to the Quartermaster department until April1865 when the 15th was disbanded. He died in Basque County, Texas before 1907.
