The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum The National Archives of Norway has made many very important records available for free on this site. Use this site to search Norwegian census and emigration records. Remember to click on the "English" button on the homepage! Slekt & Historie. Has wonderful information about Norwegian naming patterns, administrative units, local histories, immigration and more. A great place to start out before you begin doing research. Norway Heritage. Especially great for search for finding ships leaving from Norway during the period 1825-1925. Historielag.org. Links to a number of Norwegian local historical societies. www.bt.no/skatt. Searchable Norwegian tax lists for 2000, 2001 and 2002. Use this to find your Norwegian cousins! This site is controversial and may be removed from the web soon. Oluf Rygh: Norwegian Farm Names. Norwegian farm names, based on O. Rygh's index of Norwegian farm names from the early 1900's. Search on a farm name and find the geographic location and parish. You'll have to try variant spellings, as this site will not do this for you right now. Vesterheim Civil War Page. Searchable database for Norwegians in the Civil War. Norwegian National Library's Promise of America. Norwegian Emigration to America and Norwegian American history 1825-2000. An interactive website with materials from the Norwegian Emigrant Museum and National Library of Norway. Sons of Norway, a fraternal society which promotes appreciation of the heritage and culture of Norway. Includes address of lodges. Make sure you click on "Learn Norwegian On-line" to access Norwegian genealogical terms. Family Search by the LDS church. One of the most important free internet sites. Has many useful databases, some of which are submitted by individuals and thus may be inaccurate, some of which are transcriptions, such as the 1880 census. Always take a look at this site first to see if any work has already been done on an ancestor. Heritage Quest was long the main supplier of census microfilms to libraries. Now this company makes a number of important databases available for a fee to libraries and genealogical organizations. If your library can afford to subscribe to this site you can use it at home just by typing in your library card number. Use this site especially to search census records. You will see scanned images of the actual census pages. Ancestry.com is a very useful site which is available to individuals and libraries for a fee. Currently this is the best source to view the 1930 census. Rootsweb.com is the premier non-profit genealogical website in America. Links to many great volunteer projects, including the Tombstone Project and USGENWEB, on which volunteers maintain websites about each county in America. You will find information about the county and may also find cemetery listings, biographies, vital records, and other information. You can also link to Norwegian genealogy newsgroups and mailing lists here. Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites. This is the main access page for websites on every genealogical topic you can possibly think of. Norwegian American Historical Association. This wonderful organization has been collecting archival materials on Norwegians in America for decades. Most of their photographic collection is online, and much of their catalog is also online. Ellis Island Records. Has a searchable database of over 22 million passengers and crew members coming through the Port of new York between 1892 and 1924. U.S. Vital Records. Use this site to find out how to acquire vital records (birth, death, marriage) from each state. Has addresses and fee information. Land Office records of the Bureau of Land Management. Find out if your ancestors bought land in the U.S. from the government. If they did you'll find scanned images of their documents here. U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Search any geographic name and find out where it is. Misbach Enterprises. Free genealogical charts and Gedcom tool. |
