Charles Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed him as living in Buchanan, La Crosse County, WI, age 38, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 12, 1861 at La Crosse, and mustered on December 10, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Olson was sick in a hospital at Nashville, TN on August 1, November 26, and on December 26, 1862. He “has not been heard from since and is dropped as deserter”, the Company E clerk wrote on the roster of August 31, 1864. Charles Olson died at Nashville Hospital on January 14, 1863 and is buried at the National Cemetery there; section B, grave 1075.
