John Nilson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed NIlson as living in Waupaca, Waupaca County, WI, age 27, and unmarried. He enlisted on October 20, 1861 at Scandinavia, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was on sick leave in Waupaca in July 1863. In September 1863, he was with the provisions transport from Stevenson, AL. Nilson was sick in hospital at Chattanooga, TN in October 1863. In 1864, he served at Brigade Headquarters. He was then sick in Chattanooga in July 1864. Nilson mustered out with Company I at Chattanooga on February 10, 1865.
