Anton Monson born in Norway and worked as a sailor and a baker. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.

The army listed Monson as living in Manitowoc, WI, age 32, and married. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’4½”. He enlisted for three years on December 4, 1863 at Oconomowoc. The enlistment is credited to Oconomowoc, Waukesha County, WI. He mustered at Madison, WI on December 24, 1863 as a Private (Menig) with a paid bounty of $60.

Monson joined the Company at Strawberry Plains, VA on March 31, 1864. He was taken prisoner at New Hope, GA on May 27, 1864. He returned to Company D on August 4, 1864. He transferred to Company H on February 13, 1865, then transferred temporarily to the WI 24th Infantry, and finally to I Company of the 13th on June 10, 1865. He was sick when he mustered out.
