Jens Olson Moe joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Moe as living in Columbus, Columbia County, age 23, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on February 19, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). Moe died of sickness at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on May 19, 1862. He was buried in “Mississippi River” National Cemetery near Memphis, TN.
