Andrew O. Moe was born on December 14, 1837 in Norway. He immigrated in 1854 to WI.

Moe joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.

The army listed Moe as living in Dane County, WI, born in Norway, age 23, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, sandy hair, light complexion, and stood 5’4”. He enlisted for three years on October 21, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on December 2, 1861 as a Private (Menig). On May 1, 1862, he was transferred to Company E on order of Colonel Heg. A year later, he was discharged from the service for disability May 19, 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN.

One and a half years later, Moe enrolled again as a Private, this time for one year, and was mustered on November 10, 1864 at Prairie du Chien, WI as a substitute for John Helmenstine of Ridgeway, Iowa County, WI. He served in G Company of the WI 7th Infantry. Moe took part in the Battle of Hatcher’s Run, VA on February 6, 1865. He was sent to General Hospital on March 21, 1865. He mustered out on July 3, 1865.

After the war, he returned to WI where he married Mathia in about 1869. Together, they had 10 children, including Bertha M. (1870), Olaus (1871), Anna (1872), Olina (1874), Henry (1877), Albert (1879), August (1881), Christian (1886), Maline (1888), and Mable (1892). They lived for a short time in IA, where Henry was born, before relocating to MN. In 1880, they lived in Vernon, Dodge County, MN and he worked as a blacksmith. In 1900, they lived in Hayfield, Dodge County, MN. Towards the end of his life, Moe lived in Rugby, Pierce County, ND. He died there on December 14, 1920, and is buried in Persilla Watts Cemetery in Rugby.
