Andrew Mickelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves "KK's Protectors" in honor of the 15th's first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.

The army listed Mickelson as living in Manitowoc County, WI, age 25, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 20, 1861 at Manitowoc, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 12, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was left behind sick in hospital at Bardstown, KY on October 6, 1862. However, he was discharged from the service at Benton Barracks, St. Louis on January 15, 1863 in order to enlist in C Company of the Cavalry Battalion, MS Naval Brigade. On December 15, 1864, Captain Charles Gustafson of Company F wrote that Mickelson had been absent from his company for “over two years”, “is said to have been “transferred to a Marine Brigade”, but that “no official information being received is now dropped as a deserter”. War department records show he had been discharged from the service from the 15th on January 15, 1863 at Benton Barracks, MO to allow him to enlist in E Company of the Navy Battalion of the MA Marine Brigade.

On August 17, 1926, his widow Margaret A. Michaelson, filed a pension in his name in OR. Andrew had previously filed a pension himself on November 22, 1887 in WI.
