Mathias Mathiasen was born in Norway on May 17, 1841, the son of Mathias Mathiassen Kroshuss and Anne Søndresdatter Steensrud. He emigrated from Sauland parish, Hjartdal, Telemark on May 10, 1847. He was a Great Lakes sailor before he joined the war.

He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself "Clausen's Guards" in honor of the 15th's first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI. The army listed Mathiasen as living in Norway Township, Racine County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 11, 1861 at Milwaukee, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI, on December 2, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was left sick at Island No. 10 on March 20, 1862. He was killed in Battle at Stones River, TN on December 31, 1862. He was the brother of soldier Jermond Matison (38th WI Inf).
