Trond Knudson was born in Valders, Norway on September 6, 1828.
Knudson served in the war on two separate occasions. First, he joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves KK Protectors in honor of the 15th’s first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.
The army listed him as living in Manitowoc County, WI, age 33, and unmarried. Knudson enlisted for three years on October 21, 1861 at Manitowoc, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 12, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Bowling Green, KY on September 17, 1862, and discharged from the service there on January 21, 1863.
On the second occasion, Knudson enlisted for one year on September 20, 1864 in Manitowoc, WI. He mustered on October 7, 1864 at Madison and had a bounty of $100. He served as a Private for K Company of the 27th WI, joining them at the recruiting depot on November 7, 1864. He mustered out at Clarksville, TX on July 14, 1865.
After the war, he returned to Liberty, Manitowoc County, WI. He married Gunhild and it is not known if they had any children. He worked as a farmer. In the 1890 Veterans Schedules, Gunhild is listed as his widow, and both of his military service records are listed. Knudson died on August 17, 1889 and is buried in West Valders Cemetery, Liberty, Manitowoc County, WI. Gunhild died on February 10, 1895 and is buried in the same cemetery.
