Svend Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from that WI County. The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 43, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 25, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Johnson was detached from Company D on Mississippi River Island No. 10 and assigned to Company A for a month during April 1862. He was sick in the hospital on July 28, 1862. He became unfit for service and was discharged from a hospital in Cincinnati, OH on October 6, 1862.
