John Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in Onalaska, La Crosse County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 23, 1861 at La Crosse and mustered on December 1, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick at Bird’s Point, MO on March 14, 1862 and then moved to hospital at Mound City, IL on March 18, 1862. He was listed as still there on June 3, 1862 and later moved to hospital at Nashville, TN. Johnson was known to have gone home on sick furlough. He was then sick at Murfreesboro, TN on June 24, 1863. He died of consumption in New Albany, IN on July 14, 1863. He was buried in New Albany Cemetery.
