John Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet. The army listed him as living in Door Creek, Dane County, WI, age 25, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 11, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 and sick in hospital in Iuka, MS on August 21, 1862. Johnson was wounded in the Battle at Chickamauga, GA on September 19, 1863 and taken prisoner. He died in prison on February 1, 1864 of his wounds and was buried in Marietta, GA; section A, grave 118.
