Andrew M. Johnson born in Stavanger, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun. The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, a cabinet maker, age 37, and married. He had brown eyes, dark hair, light complexion, and stood 5’8”. He enlisted for three years on September 27, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He transferred from Company A to Company C to Company D. Johnson developed arthritis in his left knee and in one ankle, and was discharged from the service for disability at Camp Randall on January 31, 1862.

After the war, he returned in IL. In 1890, he filed a pension. In 1899, his wife Anna E. filed a pension as his widow.
