Jacob B. Holm was born on January 28, 1834 in Schleswig Holstein, Denmark. He immigrated in 1857.
Holm joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of his company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.
The army listed Holm as living in Raymond, Racine County, WI, age 28, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 15, 1861, at Madison, WI, and mustered there on December 27, 1861, as a Private (Menig). He was recorded as absent without leave on October 20, 1862, but was found to be sick in New Albany, IN. He ran away from the hospital in Cave City, KY, on November 1, 1862.
After the war, he moved to Minnesota. He married Wilhelmina Thomas in Winona County, MN, in July 1874. She was born in Germany in 1851. Together, they had at least 8 children: Amelia (1875), Fred (1880), Otto (1882), August (1894), Laura (1886), John (1891), Mary, and Matilda. In 1903, St. Charles, MN, suffered a tornado. Holm’s house was destroyed and he suffered severe injuries. He gradually declined in health after that and died on March 1, 1910. Both he and Wilhelmina are buried in Hillside Cemetery, St. Charles, Winona County, MN.
