John Hatland joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Hatland as living in Freeman, Crawford County, WI, age 31, and married. He enlisted for three years on November 4, 1861 in Crawford County, and mustered on January 27, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick in hospital at Danville, KY on October 18, 1862. He was discharged from there to return to the regiment on February 16, 1863, but “has failed to report and is dropped on 30 Apr 1863 as deserter”. He was found to have been discharged from infantry service at St. Louis, MO on January 20, 1863 so that he could join a Marine Brigade.

After the war, an unnamed widow filed a pension in his name on November 4, 1865. A minor named Ole A. Runice then filed on May 20, 1874.
