Hans Hanson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Hanson as living in Moscow, Iowa County, WI, age 29, and married. He enlisted for three years on November 25, 1861 in Iowa County, and mustered on January 4, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was sent to camp hospital, Chattanooga, TN on October 7, 1863. He died there of chronic diarrhea on 13 [or 21] December 1863. He was buried in National Cemetery at Chattanooga, TN; section D, grave 852. He is on the Roll of Honor of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps. His wife, Anne, filed a pension in his name on August 12, 1864.
