Halvor O. Halvorson was born on August 4, 1939 in Laurdals Clerical District, Øvre Telemarken, Norway. He immigrated in 1853 to WI.
Halvorson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed Halvorson as living in Kilbourn City, Columbia County, WI, age 22, and married. He enlisted for three years on November 6, 1861 at Kilbourn City, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 8, 1861. He was appointed Corporal (Korporal) on January 1, 1862. He was left sick at home in Kilbourn City on March 2, 1862. On June 3, 1862, he was reported to be absent without leave for a month. He was reduced to ranks. Halvorson was sick in Bowling Green, KY on September 17, 1862. One report says he ran away from the Bowling Green hospital on July 2, 1864 and was listed as a deserter. However he produced discharge papers showing that he had become unfit for service and was discharged from the service on March 4, 1863. He was listed then as a Private (Menig).
Halvorson married an unknown woman after leaving the service. They had several children, including Ole (1863), Abraham (1865), and Gustavus (1868). He married his second wife, Carrie (Karen), in 1880. Together, their children were Catherine (1880), Alfred (1883), Henry M. (1885), Claudenia (1888), and Kenneth (1891). In 1880 and 1900, Halvor and Carrie were living in Stevens Point, Portage County, WI. He worked as a lumberman. Both were buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Iola, Waupaca, WI.
