Hans Gunderson was born “Hans Gunderson Haugen” in Hjartdal, Telemark about 1837. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of his company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Gunderson as living in Scandinavia, Waupaca County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 12, 1861 at Scandinavia, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Sergeant (Sersjant) on February 1, 1862. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN on September 1863. On May 27, 1864, he was taken prisoner at New Hope Church, GA. He died of scurvy in Andersonville Prison on October 11, 1864. He was buried there in grave 10,691.
