Nelse Erickson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Erickson as living in New Glarus, Green County, WI, age 20, a farmer, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on February 26, 1864 at Janesville, WI, and mustered there the same day as a Private. He transferred to WI 13th Infantry Co. I on June 11, 1865. He mustered out on November 24, 1865 at San Antonio, TX.
