James P. Daniels was born in January 1824 to Amos Daniels of Ludlow, MA and Mary Bissell of East Windsor, CT. His parents married in 1823. On April 5, 1844, James married Harriet E. Goodale of East Hartford, CT. A man named Levi Smith married them in CT. A year later, Harriet’s brother, Austin, married James’ sister, Mary. Harriet and James had three children while still living in CT: Julius (1848), Mary (1849), and George (1852). In 1860, the family was living in Vernon, Waukesha, WI.

Daniels joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company.

The army listed Daniels as living in Vernon, Waukesha County, WI, age 37, and married. He enlisted for three years on January 1, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 10, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick in Iuka, MS on August 21, 1862 and in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863.  On January 1, 1865, he mustered out with C Company at Chattanooga. The muster out roll lists him as “Danielson, James P.”

After the war in 1870, the Daniels’ family had moved to Newaygo County, MI and James worked as a farmer. Amos Daniels lived with them, and Austin and Mary Goodale lived next door. In 1900, they were still living in the same county. The federal census states that they had 5 children total, but only three were still living. Daniels died of cancer on March 6, 1903 in Newaygo, Newaygo County, MI.
