Anders Christopherson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the "Wergeland Guards" in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Christopherson as living in Halfway Creek, La Crosse County, WI, age 29. He had blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’9¾”. He enlisted for three years on August 26, 1862 at La Crosse, WI, and mustered there on August 28, 1862. He had a bounty of $100 and was a Private (Menig). He served as an escort with the provisional transport from Stevenson, AL on October 13, 1863. He then transferred to Company H on December 1, 1864 and to 24th Infantry on February 13, 1865.
