William Burgeson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”
The army listed Burgeson as living in York, Green County, WI, a farmer, age 20, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’10”. He enlisted for three years on November 2, 1861 in Green County, and mustered on December 10, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was detached in the Light Battalion of 2nd Brigade. He was wounded in battle at Stones River, TN, and sent to camp hospital at Chattanooga. Since September 15, 1863, he was sick in the field hospital at Chattanooga, TN. He sent to a hospital at Nashville. He died of chronic diarrhea in U.S. General Hospital No. 8 at Nashville, TN on November 9, 1863. He was buried in National Cemetery; section E, grave 185. He was entered on the Roll of Honor for the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps.
