Nils Bjornson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed Bjornson as living in Spring Prairie, Walworth County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 30, 1861 at Spring Prairie, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was captured by the enemy at New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864. He died of scurvy in Andersonville Prison on October 14, 1864. He was buried there in grave 10,919. The Andersonville records show him as “Bohnson”.
