Nicolay Bidstrup joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”

The army listed Bidstrup as living in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI, age 39, and unmarried. He enlisted on December 3, 1861 at La Crosse, and mustered on December 10, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was then promoted to Corporal (Korporal). He was left sick at Nashville, TN on December 26, 1862. He was sent to Convalescent Camp at Stevenson, AL on August 28, 1863. On September 1, 1863, he was transferred to Invalid Corps (Veterans Reserve Corps).
