Ole V. Wingaard was born on October 27, 1836 in Christiania, Norway. He came to America and to Decorah in 1860. He was married to Martine Gulbranson on January 23, 1862 at Washington Prairie church.

He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company K. The company called itself “Clausen’s Guards” in honor of the 15th’s first Chaplain, Claus L. Clausen. Most of the company was recruited from Scandinavian communities in MN and IA, with the rest from WI.

He enlisted for three years on January 23, 1862 in Winneshiek County and mustered at Madison, WI on February 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). His residence is listed as Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA.  He was on Military Police duty in October 1862. He was seriously wounded at Stones River, TN on December 31, 1862 and sent to a hospital in Nashville, TN. He became unfit for service and was discharged fordisability due to his wounds at Louisville, KY on April 27, 1863.

After the war he and his wife had six children and he became a tailor. Three of the children were Emma (1864), Minnie (1870), and Nellie (1873). Martine Wingaard died in July 1876 in Washington Prairie. In 1893, Ole was living in Decorah, IA. In August 1904, he married Mrs. Anna Hegge. Anna was born about 1853 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1866. Ole Wingaard died at Decorah on Sunday, July 18, 1915 and is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery there.
