Peter Walin was born in Sweden. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the "Wergeland Guards" in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed him as living in Fox Lake, Dodge County, WI, age 27, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 15, 1861, at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861, as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal). On May 1, 1863, he was absent sick and believed sent to Convalescent Center at Leiren at Murfreesboro, TN, on May 7, 1863. He remained sick until May 29, 1863. He transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps on November 1, 1863, and then mustered out at New Albany, IN, on November 22, 1864, at expiration of his term.
