Herman Thoreson was born in  Ringerike, Norway, about 1826. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed him as living in Pleasant Spring, Dane County, WI, age 35, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 28, 1861 at Madison, WI and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was taken prisoner in Battle of Stones River on December 31, 1862. Thoreson was exchanged and returned to Regiment on May 1, 1863. He mustered out with Company on December 2, 1864 at Chattanooga, TN.

After the war, he was living in Nunda, Freeborn County, MN. He was single and working as a farmer. His status was the same in the 1870 and 1880 Census.
