Finger Thoresen was born on the Lien farm, Nore parish, Buskerud. He left the parish April 30 1853, with his parents, brothers and sister to come to America.

Fingar Thoresen joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G as a Private (Menig). The men of the company called themselves the "Rock River Rangers." His brother, Reier Thorsen , also served in Company G.

The army listed him as living in Newark, Rock County, WI, age 23, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 26, 1861 at Beloit, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI, on December 13, 1861, as a Private (Menig). Thoresen was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL, in October 1863. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN, on November 28, 1863. He was taken prisoner at New Hope Church, GA, on May 27, 1864. Records state he survived Andersonville Prison and mustered out December 20 1864, while another source says he died September 24, 1864 while a prisoner.
