Lewis Solberg joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 35, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on September 30, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He detached to Company A at Mississippi River Island No. 10 from April 1 to May 1, 1862. Solberg stayed behind with the baggage train in Nashville, TN, on December 6, 1862. On May 9, 1863, he was assigned as clerk in the Brigade commissary. He was sick in Stevenson, AL on August 28, 1863 and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on September 1, 1863.
