Christian Schow joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed him as living in Waupun, Fond du Lac County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 1, 1862 at Waupun, and mustered at Madison, WI on January 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He left behind sick in Iuka on August 20, 1862 and disappeared from there on March 30, 1862. Schow was listed as a deserter. It was said that he had been discharged from the service, but no official records show that. There is a grave marker in the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Waupun with Schow’s name and the inscription “Co. D 15 Wisc. Inf. [Civil War]”. However, there is no birth or death date listed.
