Ole Ronningen was born “Hans Andressen Rønningen” on July 1, 1835 in Bø, Telemark, Norway, son of Andres Jacobsen Rønningen and Kirsti Henrichsdatter. His siblings were Jacob (1839) and Johannes (1841). He came to America with his family on “Argo”, which sailed from Havre, France, and arrived in NY on July 26, 1843. They came to Norway Township, Racine County, WI. His parents had two more sons: Henry (1846), and Christian (1850).

In 1859, he tried to go to Pike’s Peak, CO. However, he only traveled to KS and then settled in IA. Ronningen joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company C on November 6, 1861. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Bear Hunters,” but they were also known as the Color Company because the regimental Color Guard was attached to their company. He was shot in the shoulder and wounded in the head at Murfreesboro. He was sent to Libby Prison where he stayed for 40 days.

After the war, he was married on May 9, 1865 to Anna Jensdatter Hunnekilen (1839-1906) and they settled near Saude, Howard County, IA in 1867. They had 7 children, but one died in infancy. Their names were Andrew M. (1868), Mary O. (1869), James H. (1871), Louise O. (1873), John W. (1876), and Anna C. (1880). He served on the county board of supervisors for 4 years.  He died June 18, 1903.
