He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted.

The army listed him as living in Mt. Morris, Waushara County, WI, age 23, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 4, 1861 at Scandinavia, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Peterson was discharged from the service for disability due to disease (consumption) at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on October 4, 1862.

After the war. he married Caroline Olson on March 20, 1864 in Mt. Morris, Waushara, WI. Her parents were Halvor Olson and Darde Nelson. John and Caroline had two children: Nelson M. (1867) and Lena (1878). They lived in Marion, Waushara County, WI and John worked as a farmer. On September 2, 1883, John married Marion (Maren) Sofie Hanson.
