Ole S. Olson was born about 1830 in Norway. He married a woman named Margarethe and they had at least one child together while still in Norway named John (1857). They immigrated about 1860 to the United States.
Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company F. The men of the company called themselves “KK’s Protectors” in honor of the 15th’s first Lieutenant Colonel, Kiler K. Jones. “F” was also known as the Valdres Company because a large number of its members hailed from the Valdres region of Norway.
The army listed him as living in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, WI, age 32, and married. He enlisted for three years on January 8, 1862 at Manitowoc, and mustered at Madison, WI on January 11, 1862 as a Private (Menig). Olson was seriously wounded at Stones River, TN on June 30, 1862, and sent to the hospital in Nashville, TN. He went from there to Madison, WI where he was mustered out on January 13, 1865.
After the war, Olson and his family relocated to MN. By 1880, they were living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN. Ole was working as an expressman. His wife, son, and daughter-in-law Josephine were living with him. In 1885, they were living with Clitherall, Otter Tail County, MN. In 1895, they had relocated to Battle Lake, Otter Tail County, MN and he worked as a farmer. By 1910, he was widowed, living with his son John and grandson Arthur (1886), and working as a sign painter. Olson died on June 6, 1910. Both he and his wife are buried in Trefoldighed Lutheran Church Cemetery in Battle Lake.
