Nils Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed him as living in Oconomowoc, Waukesha County, WI, age 42, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 25, 1861 at Oconomowoc, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 8, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Olson sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was absent with the commissary supply train during July 1862. He was sick in Iuka, MS on August 20, 1862. Olson died of disease at U. S. General Hospital in Jackson, TN on September 22, 1862. He was buried in National Cemetery at Corinth, MS. His widow, Mary, filed a pension in his name on February 2, 1863.
